A mother was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to charges she raped her 10-month-old baby.
Ashley N. Jessup, 25, of Columbus was silent and tearful during her sentencing hearing Tuesday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
The Columbus Dispatch reported Jessup took cellphone video of herself performing oral sex on her infant son and placing his hand on her genitals. She then sent the videos to her boyfriend, Jordan Russell, 24, of Battle Creek, Mich.
Russell’s ex-girlfriend found the videos and contacted police, the Dispatch reported.
Russell, who is not the child’s father, pleaded guilty to child sexual-abusive computer activity in Calhoun County, Mich., Circuit Court in June and was sentenced to three-to-20 years in prison. Prosecutors said he encouraged Jessup to commit the acts and send him the videos of it.
The judge presiding over Jessup’s case said he had never before seen such a case in his 30-year legal career.
“The court is at a complete loss to explain how this could have happened,” Judge Pat Sheeran said.
Jessup’s lawyer initially contemplated a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity plea, but psychologists examining Jessup determined she was not mentally ill.
The child, now 2, is living with a grandmother.
Jessup will not be eligible for parole for 15 years and if released will have to register as a sex offender, the Dispatch said.
